She did two numbers, showed off her classical training and a remarkable range, which I later found out when I talked to her nine years later, stretched from low Eb to high G# and she told me she once belted out a high A (A5). She also writes and plays piano.
About four years after that benefit concert I was in a club in Vegas and a dance tune was playing and I asked my friend who it was singing on the tune,
she said Lara Fabian, I said "no way". Or I thought to myself, it's a different Lara Fabian. So in the age of the PC, I Googled it and sure enough it was the girl with the lyric soprano range who had the #1 single on the Billboard Dance Chart.
The tune was "I Will Love Again".
That pretty much tells you of her vocal talent, but she stressed to me her Capricorn personality (to strive for a goal) was aimed at a more adult contemporary audience world wide, which she has now achieved.
Singing in six languages, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Flemish, and German,
Lara has sold over 18 million records planet wide.
Like Ivete Sangalo who we featured in this category last time, she has taken
Sony and Universal recording companies to new heights.
Lara's album "9" released in 2005 had huge success and oddly enough lead to a nine nation tour throughout Europe and Africa. The lead single off "9", La Lettre"(The Letter) went to #3 in France and #1 in Belgium.
Lara is as classy as they come, she treats her fans like family, as they do her, it's a true love affair between the two. She is part of one of the most moving videos I have ever seen, where her audience brings here to tears by breaking into song to tell her they love her.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk-fmvxmh1E
In 2007 after her daughter Lou was born Lara was "showered"
with gifts in her first public appearance by her adoring following.
She says her influences growing up were Barbara Streisand and Queen!
So we have Ivete Sangalo and Lara Fabian to add to the list of Famous Unknowns.
They both "pop" in to the United States every year or so, and I keep an eye out for
them because they are amazingly talented, beautiful and most of all they have
enormous respect for their fans.
Lara will be in:
Yerevan, Armenia...London, and Moscow in the next few weeks.
The London Concert (3/30) will be the 80th Birthday Celebration
for former Soviet President, Mikhail Gorbachev!
