StreetcredMusic...This blog has followed a quote I heard many years ago..."Sometimes you must leap first, and build your wings on the way down". From nothing it has become a blog containing dozens of Indie artists. Follow me as I introduce you to them, from the place where they breed, New York City! ....and come with us as we document it on film!!

StreetcredMusic: Songs Of Summer. Madeleine Peyroux and Janis Joplin

 Songs for Summer

 Madeleine Peyroux

Young Madeleine moved to Paris with her mother in 1987 following her parents divorce. “To soothe me during the upheaval”, she recalls, “I was given a guitar and took to playing in the streets almost immediately.”

The curious teenager started skipping school to frequent the city’s Latin Quarter where street musicians dwelled, keen to learn about their music and way of life. At 16, the fearless teen joined the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band with whom she toured the streets of Europe, discovering Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday while “voraciously picking up all the songs and all the guitar playing” she could.

Madeleine’s thirst for creative exploration is unfading and her willingness to face creative challenges remains as solid now as it was three decades ago.

Joplin died of an accidental heroin overdose in 1970 aged 27, after releasing three albums (two with Big Brother, and one solo album). A second solo album, Pearl, was released in January 1971, just over three months after her death. It reached number one on the Billboard charts. She was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Rolling Stone ranked Joplin number 46 on its 2004 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time[11] and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. She remains one of the top-selling musicians in the United States, with Recording Industry Association of America certifications of 18.5 million albums sold.

Michelle Mangione

About Michelle...😍

With her band, cajon (box drum), drums and acoustic guitar, songwriter Michelle Mangione challenges the world of live music to rise to a very intimate and honest level.

To date, she has released 4 Independent CDs and numerous independent videos.

She is frequently seen playing guitar and "feet drums" at the same time, a skill she learned out of necessity. "I couldn't afford to pay a drummer, and needed the percussive edge in our acoustic shows, so I devised a pedal driven drum set that I could play with my feet", says Michelle.
