 Q: An open question about playing free gigs, while venue owners take in hundreds if not thousands of $$$ while you are on stage.

  A: Why would you disrespect yourself by allowing venues to make a profit off of you, with nothing in return for your hard work? As musicians, we need to start supporting our profession and stand up for ourselves.

Think about everything that you have done to get to where you are now.  When you play a gig, you are displaying thousands and thousands of hours of hard work to an audience.  You’ve suffered through lots of frustration, sacrifice, and even money to hone your craft.  Don’t let all of this time and energy go to waste by giving it all away for free! You are so much more valuable than that! Art is what drives culture forward, and you have chosen to be an ambassador of art.  You are giving a great service to your community, but you still need to survive just like everyone else. 

    Free gigs: You are devaluing the entire industry...

Exposé, Seasons Change.

Exposé is an American Latin freestyle vocal group. Primarily consisting of lead vocalists Jeanette Jurado, Ann Curless, and Gioia Bruno, the group achieved much of their success between 1984 and 1993, becoming the first group to have four top ten hits on the Billboard hot 100 chart from its debut album, including the 1988 #1 hit "Seasons Change". In March 2015, Billboard magazine named the group the eighth most-successful girl group of all-time.

StreetcredMusic: Songs For Fall, "Autumn In New York" With Elia Bastida

"Autumn in New York" is a jazz standard composed by Vernon Duke in Westport, Connecticut in the summer of 1934. It was written without a commission or for a specific show, but was offered by Duke to producer Murray Anderson for his Broadway musical Thumbs Up! which opened on December 27, 1934 (and closed in May 1935) and was performed by J. Harold Murray.

 Many versions of the song have been recorded over the years by numerous musicians and singers. The only version to achieve chart success as a single in the USA was that by Frank Sinatra which reached No. 27 in 1949.

Jazz versions have been performed by Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Stan Kenton, Sarah Vaughan, Sheila Jordan, Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal, and Salvador Sobral. The song was also recorded by Jo Stafford, and Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald recorded it as a duet. Among the instrumental performances of the tune is a legendary version by guitarist Tal Farlow.

In the 1960s there was a battle of the generations, the younger movement prevailed. However through the 1970s and then with the Reagan administration, aided by fear driven rhetoric and massive dollar support from corporations, the top 10% regained control.

The 21st century is now totally driven by a few, who control, money markets, production and distribution of everything. That "Hard Rain" Dylan spoke of in 1962, is now flooding the planet.

Bob Dylan was a leader of the movement a Prophet, and a Poet. I place him at the top of the most respected musician of my lifetime.
