Champian Fulton:
  Born in Oklahoma, Champian is considered one of the most gifted pure Jazz musicians of her generation. She grew up with music in the home; her mother and father (Jazz trumpeter and educator Stephen Fulton) recognized her fascination with music at an early age. The presence of her father’s musician friends, including Clark Terry and Major Holley, inspired her focus on Jazz. Her first paid musical engagement was with her own band at Clark Terry’s 75th Birthday Party; she was 10 years old.

 Licia Missori, Pianist and composer from Rome, Italy, she began to play and compose at the age of three or four. During the last 15 years she has been conducting concerts both as a soloist and in collaboration with other artists, accumulating hundreds of concerts in Italy and abroad.
 She works at freelance music transcription and teacher of music theory, solfeggio and piano.

I ran the indiemusician route for several years. Now I'm established in the music biz as a teacher. No, not teaching music or voice, teaching how to run a music business. A business of one or a full band, you must create an income from your product. Business #101.

I want to talk about Patreon. I myself have received several communications from musicians I know to join Patreon, and literally help support them financially.

I feel sad that they have asked me to do this. Sad because I know they are all being taken advantage of by venue owners who will not pay them for their gigs. Venue owners who are literally stealing from them, and profiting from their labors.

Of course the obvious solution is for all musicians to demand a payment for their gigs.
But egos won't allow them to put themselves in demand. That's a subject for a more serious time.

I am also a bit insulted that I'm being ask to give money, when they give their talent away, so venue owners can make hundreds if not thousands of dollars while they are on stage.

Summing up, what you are doing is asking your fans, who buy your music, come to see you, buy a drink or two, maybe some food, gas money, travel money, to also give you a monthly salary.
While the bar is full at anywhere from $10 to $14 dollars a drink, and they give you nothing.
Have you considered how it feels to get a request like that?

I have received many OpEds over the years from women of power. By power I mean women who have spoken out, and live the life they speak about. All have discovered the many injustices women encounter, and want to expose them, and give a voice to those people who may not have the platform they have. This one comes from Alessia Ramusino.

Yallah is a hymn to love, love for life, an immensely great and precious gift for every single living creature. No one has power over the lives of others and everyone must be able to enjoy rights that must be guaranteed. Respect for life in all its aspects, religious freedom, the possibility of educating oneself and acquiring a solid culture, work, the right physical and material well-being are today indisputable rights and their respect and their promotion measure the degree of civilization that a society has achieved.

I studied and graduated in Science and Politics at the University of Genoa choosing the Socio-political address precisely because I always felt a strong motivation towards social issues.

I chose a word deliberately in Arabic and the song has the text in English, to enunciate a theme that involves all peoples in a transversal way to geographical, geopolitical, demographic, religious, cultural and social class factors.

Yallah is an Arabic word of common use which means "strength, strength, move". And this is precisely the message that we want to give, or a warning for all to take not only conscience of this social scourge but above all to set in motion and in place, each according to their possibilities, all the measures to defeat the phenomenon.

100 women who all together repeat RESPECT AND LOVE in a universal march for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. A clear message with an international aim, a very touching moment with a very strong emotional impact.

Thus was born the vision of the artist, Alessia Ramusino, of a flashmob that would unite women not only in intent but also in appearance, dressing all in red, a color that has many symbolism's from love, blood, luck, passion: #100womendressedinred

The intent is to spread THE CULTURE OF RESPECT.

“Yallah is undoubtedly a very important song for me because it represents the commitment of an artist in facing a social plague with her own soul, questioning herself and exposing herself in first person. This is why I created a path, which began on 8 March, the day when women come together to defend their civil rights to arrive on 25 November, a date designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women’, calling on governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities aimed at raising public awareness.

Many institutions, associations, organizations, anti-violence centers, which in recent years have supported and shared the project.”

StreetcredMusic: Playing Free Gigs, One Woman's Opinion. "The Mop Up Band"

       
 Q: An open question about playing free gigs, while venue owners take in hundreds if not thousands of $$$ while you are on stage.

  A: Why would you disrespect yourself by allowing venues to make a profit off of you, with nothing in return for your hard work? As musicians, we need to start supporting our profession and stand up for ourselves.

Think about everything that you have done to get to where you are now.  When you play a gig, you are displaying thousands and thousands of hours of hard work to an audience.  You’ve suffered through lots of frustration, sacrifice, and even money to hone your craft.  Don’t let all of this time and energy go to waste by giving it all away for free! You are so much more valuable than that! Art is what drives culture forward, and you have chosen to be an ambassador of art.  You are giving a great service to your community, but you still need to survive just like everyone else. 

    Free gigs: You are devaluing the entire industry...
